BIOCAPACITY

Biocapacity(Bc) of bio-sphere is the regenerative capacity of the bio-sphere in terms of productivity and waste-absorbing capability to produce what is required for consumption and to absorb the waste generated by human activities. As per the Global Footprint Network calculations(NFA 2019) biocapacity of the earth is estimated as 1.7 global hectares(gha) per person in 2016.

ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT

Ecological Footprint(EFp) measures the humanity’s demand on the bio-sphere in terms of the area of biologically productive land and sea required to provide the resources we use and absorb our waste. In 2016 global ecological footprint was 2.62 global hectares(gha) per person. A global hectare is a hectare with world average ability to produce resources and absorb waste which includes sequestration of carbon dioxide

HUMAN DEVELOPMENT INDEX

The Human Development Index (HDI) is a summary measure of average achievement in key dimensions of human development: a long and healthy life, being knowledgeable and have a decent standard of living. Till 2010 they have been measured in terms of life expectancy at birth, adult literacy rate alongwith gross enrolment ratio of primary, secondary and tertiary education and gross domestic product per capita at purchasing power parity(PPP). In 2010 the methodology used to arrive the key dimensions for the HDI calculations are slightly changed. Also, UNDP introduced the new index inequality-adjusted human development index(IHDI)
